It is a nightmare trawling the internet for good quality samples. So many websites promise so much only to be another splash page asking you to pay for some obscure sample CD.
Here are 5 sites from my personal bookmarks that provide useful and good quality sounds in .wav format and more!
Findsounds
http://www.findsounds.com/
A veritable google for samples. Simple layout, massive library, really useful.
Freesound
http://www.freesound.org/
For foley sounds and the more obscure samples, freesound is the place for you. More for sound effects than music this one.
SoundSnap
http://www.soundsnap.com/
A more recent discovery, this well-organised clean looking site is home to a ton of high quality samples, both musical and otherwise.
LooperMan
http://www.looperman.com/
A great site full of music loops – particularly good for some drum loops. Requires a quick sign up to download the free loops, but listening to the loops requires no login!
Philharmonia Sample Libraries
http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/thesoundexchange/sound_samples/sample_libraries/
Woah. Ever wanted to compose orchestral music? This site has every orchestral instrument recorded at every note. It even has phrases and sounds recorded by the orchestra as a whole. By THE Philharmonia orchestra. Woah.
There you have it! I hope some of these sample websites prove useful!
Do you have any other awesome sample websites you use? Share them with us below in a comment!

At the Philharmonia website, do you need Quicktime PRO to save the samples?
Nope! Just your browser
