Okay! So the moment you’ve all been waiting for – the announcement for the winner and runners up for the Hip Hop composition competition!
There were a bunch of awesome songs submitted and it was frickin’ difficult to rank them, but I stuck to the 3 things I said I was going to judge it on:
- Production
- Originality
- Sour lemon test (How much it makes you pull a face like you’ve eaten a Sour Lemon)
As well as including the votes from the forum as a fourth category.
Okay, with all the preliminary stuff out of the way, here we go. The winner of the Hip Hop Composition Competition, who will get 5 free sample packs from primeloops.com is…
Winner: Riton – “On The Edge”
This track was pretty much maxed out on the production statistic – the drums punch and the strings and bass are tight, filling out the beat nicely. Then when the strings kick in, the sour lemon test went off the charts. Hearing this tune, you can just hear a rapper like Xzibit or Dre on top of it. Top quality, so damn cool and what it perhaps lacks in originality, it more than makes up for in the other areas. Well done to Riton!
Runners Up:
Each of the runners up will get a sample pack from primeloops.com…
Gary Gaugh – “Excess”
One of the few entries with vocals on, this just sounded like a professional rap song, so the production was highly scored. Again, perhaps not too original in terms of the beat, but the bassline made it seriously cool, a definite sour-lemon-inducer. It’s cool to hear something with a live-instrument feel to it too! Quality, catchy lyrics top this track off nicely.
M.R.I. – Panorama
Now this track doesn’t stand quite as high on production terms with the others, but the originality is high and the sour lemon is even higher. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of the unusual progression, but I’m now assuming it’s a stroke of genius, since I couldn’t help but smile and nod my head along to it. I could imagine Ludacris on top of this beat easily if the production was taken up a notch.
A special mention goes out to Danny Heff with his track “Hip Hop Composition Competition Conquisition” for actually having the chorus relating to the competition, as well as sampling some of my tutorials! Check it out – I love the catchy melody on it.

The prize of a free sample pack from primeloops.com goes to “Super Alex” – He posted more than everyone else on the forum, but it wasn’t just about the quantity – there were quality insights on several occasions, he offered opinions on plenty of tracks and he seemed to go out of his way to help people out. Nice one Alex!
The winner and runners up will be e-mailed with further details about how to go about claiming the prizes!
Thanks to everyone that has entered, voted and taken part in any way with the competition – It was great fun listening to all the music you submitted, and I’ve learned a lot about putting on competitions and I definitely want to do more competitions in the future!
I was thinking about maybe one every 3 months, making it a seasonal thing. What genre do you guys reckon I should make the next one on?

Make the next one on DnB… ;D
arrghh!
I wish I would have known of this contest and the prizes beforehand! I surely would have entered.
Props to you and Prime loops for doing this!
YEA YEA YEAAAA!! BIAB!

(I guess I can give up my ebonics now that the comps over)
Never give up the ebonics, my… uh… homeslizze!
Dnb sounds like fun
What does everyone else want?
dnb sounds good.
Definitely another hand up for Drum and Bass. Uhhh… selecta.
Personally like dubstep better — but haven’t tried producing either. So either way is cool with me. Word.
I vote progressive! lol It’s soooo badass but dnb would be fun too
I’ll second Progressive
DNB or dubstep completely… all in favor raise hand!
[...] I got to announce the winner of the hip hop composition competition this week! It was great fun listening to all the tunes, but it’ll be more fun to give out all the prizes! I’ve just got the e-mails from everyone who has won detailing what they want, so now I can sort it all out for them! To see the winners, click here! [...]
Yeah, I wouldn’t mind DnB either.
I liked the competition even though I’m not even close to the producinglevel of most of the BIAB forum.
A trance one would GREAT too !!
but every competion is good !! so waiting for the next and this time i’ll participate !!
Dubstep would be great! But i haven’t done any dnb, so a Competition would be a nice incentive to get things started:P
Ive been watching yur videos 4 a while now and i think its time 2 enter the competition. I use reason 4 and ive just invested in a M-Audio Oxygen 49 keep up the good work every1.

Peace!
you know what you said Dave, that it kinda lacked in originality…well, im not trying to knock the winner off or whatever…the beat is good, and congrats…but not only could you hear a rapper like Dr.Dre or Xzibit on it…but the 4th bars(not sure if that is how we call it…) really…and i mean really sound like Xzibit’s ”X” song produced by…..guess who??? DR.DRE!!
Dnb or dubstep will do good for the next competition
i will absolutely enter
not that my things sound anything near to this level in quality
I can’t get over the production quality of the winner, Riton. What DAW / hardware were you using ? Do you know Dave?
there should have been a comma between “know” and “Dave” in that last post haha
Electro Trash for the next competition?
Whilst probably not the most popular genre, it’s probably the most level playing field.
The D’n'B and Dubstep guys get the ridiculously heavy bass to work with, while the house, techno and trance people have a more familiar beat structure.
The Hip-Hoppers might be at a bit of a disadvantage, but they did just get this contest. Besides, a whole ton of rappers are doing vocals for electro track nowadays anyway, so this is probably useful for them too.
Thoughts?
