You’ll probably be asking the question “What’s ‘The Dream‘” – Well, that’s the name I’ve given to my long-term goals. What I intend to achieve and what I am working on accomplishing now.
I warn you: some of this might seem a little idealistic, but I suppose that’s the kind of person I am; If I wasn’t, then I probably wouldn’t give away my tutorials for free in the hope that it’d make the world that bit better. So, here goes – The Dream as of 2010…
I want to change things. I want to build things. I want to share things. I want to encourage people; to motivate and inspire them. Being a logical kind of person, I feel the need to be more specific.
Things I dream of achieving…

Build a Community of like-minded music producers
I want to bring together people that want to learn and that want to teach. People that have a passion for music production in whatever form that might be – people in bands and people that have solo projects, let them express themselves, motivate each other, help each other improve their skills and help maintain and build the community.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Encouraging people to visit the boyinaband.com forum – the first stage of the community, providing incentives to join like competitions for being the most helpful and active member.

Making a living from boyinaband.com
I want to earn enough money so I can keep boyinaband as my job, whilst working on getting my band “You and What Army” popular. Then any extra money after I’ve covered my living expenses can be invested into other boyinaband projects.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Providing services such as production, custom tutorials and writing articles as well as advertising on the site with relevant companies (only ones I actually use in order to maintain credibility).
Help my talented friends to have successful blogs as well
People like Adam from DudeinaDrama, Emmie from GraphicsGirl, Kieran from GuywithaGuitar – these are all talented, good, interesting people whose abilities deserve to be known. I believe in the importance of promoting people, not just products.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Planning collaborations with them that are relevant to both areas of expertise.

Learn to make professional quality music.
At the moment I’d consider myself above an amateur but not quite professional. I want to improve my abilities to the point where I can recognise that my own music sounds as professionally produced as that of popular artists in the charts. Then I’d like to teach people how I did it.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Producing as much music as I can and researching how to improve my skills when I learn about new techniques, trying out new equipment to see what you need for professional productions.
Be seen as an important person in the electronic music scene
I would love to be recognised as a great producer – one who can make awesome music and has a distinctive style. Someone who famous artists go to asking me to produce their next album. Someone magazines use to reference electronic music in one-line quips. With this position I’d be able to encourage more people to share their knowledge and experience with the world, interview people who are great producers and offer a previously unseen insight into the world of professional music.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Working on a mind control device that works on people with large egos.
…There’s not really much I can do with regards to this other than working as hard as I can on the projects I’m involved in, which I am doing.
Promote free music software that is frickin’ awesome
I want to encourage people to use free software so that people putting all that effort for open source plug-ins and other software are recognised. I want to work towards providing all software for free and eventually help to make a DAW to compete with the likes of Reason, Logic, Pro Tools and Sonar available for free.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Writing blogs and making video reviews about free plug-ins.

Get my band “You and What Army” world famous and blog about everything I learn on the way
I, like many other people, dream of performing in front of thousands of people every night, having a hardcore fanbase that supports us through more than just one album, being on TV shows and having other people working for the band for things like touring and merchandise. Being able to go into a professional studio and seeing how the highest-paid producers and sound engineers in the business do it, then sharing that knowledge with the world.
However, I want to feel like I earned it and I want to explain how I did it. I think it’s sad that rock stars don’t act more like teachers, sharing their experiences with people; it could seriously help motivate up and coming musicians and encourage them to try new promotion techniques they may not have thought of.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Gigging as much as possible, writing new music and promoting You and What Army through boyinaband.com.

Become one of the top 100 most subscribed people on youtube
YouTube is the biggest video format in the world; bigger than any single TV channel as well as the second biggest search engine in the world after Google. At present, there is no-one in the top 100 to represent the massive amount of people who want to be music producers. I want to take that position, exposing the people on YouTube to all this free content, inspiring them to make music and giving them the knowledge to do so.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Making regular videos on YouTube that people are searching for.

Review music gear and promote the good stuff
Try out the hardware and software provided to me by manufacturers like Korg, Yamaha, Roland etc. and review it, make tutorials on it, make comparisons with other products and give people a good idea of what they would find useful.
What I’m currently doing to achieve this part of the Dream: Reviewing the gear I currently own and buying new equipment that I’ve researched and found useful, that and building up boyinaband’s audience to the size that warrants those companies sending equipment to me to review.

There are more things that I want to achieve, but I couldn’t possibly list them all without both babbling on into infinity and sounding like Bono. I’ve stuck to things I’m directly working on now – I want to make a difference to the music world, to help people and to encourage other people to do the same.
I’ve seen wonderful communities on the internet created by hard working people so I know it can be done – I just want to provide a resource for musicians everywhere so they can fully realise the potential of their talent without having to have a rich uncle die in mysterious circumstances.
If you feel you want to help me to achieve The Dream then there are a few things you can do.
If you are a musician, you can join the forum and get involved in the community – post your music, give opinions on other people’s songs and just share your ideas and knowledge.
If you want to get involved more actively in creating content, don’t hesitate to head over to the contact page and send me an e-mail with your ideas and any examples of your work that might be relevant!
One way you can help no matter what your situation is by donating to the site – it’ll help with running it and allow me to keep producing content for free for everyone to enjoy. Small or large – it all helps.
