What is a Bit Depth and why should I care? – 8 to 32 bit floating

This blog was written for primeloops.com – check them out for some ace samples and to see my blogs 2 months earlier!

When it comes to your music, you want Quality over Quantity.   But how do you measure the quality?   Let’s find out…

Audio come in several different shapes and sizes.   Bit Depth is one of the more important sizes – It determines how much dynamic range you can get from your audio.

Don’t confuse it with Bit Rate; they are two different things – Time for an analogy.   If you have a river (Okay, not many people can relate to actually owning a river, but you can pretend you are horrendously rich so you can afford to buy one to understand this concept better.   It’s fun, right?) the bit depth would be the depth of the river – how much water it is capable of holding, while the bit rate would be how fast the water can flow through a section of the river in a second.

But yes – for this article I’ll explain about bit depth and why it’s useful to know about it.

What is Circuit Bending?

This blog was written for primeloops.com – check them out for some ace samples and to see my blogs 2 months earlier!

There are some things you hear about that can just boggle your mind.   This is one of them.

Circuit bending is an art form unlike any other – it requires intelligence, creativity and a smidgeon of insanity.

What is Chiptune?

Unlike most genres of music, chiptune arose out of necessity.

Early video games needed music.

Technology wasn’t quite at the stage it is today, so the only music available were a few square waves and distorted samples.

But how did this restriction of technology turn into the massive genre that spans the world over today? Let’s ask some questions…

What is G Funk?

I challenge anyone to find a genre cooler than this.

It’s the genre that puts a gun to your head and forces you to nod it. The genre that is so heavy that it makes cars actually bounce up and down. The genre that rewards murder, drugs and misogyny more than any other.

This is G Funk. It’s time to ask some questions…

What is Electro House?

I have been dancing to this genre for years without realising it.

Only recently after starting to research it have I twigged – there are a lot of artists that use the same sexy sound on their club bangers. This genre can keep the people dancing without missing a beat, taking them from the funky to the robotic and everything in between.

Electro House is the sound of the late 2000 decade. It’s time to understand it. Let’s ask some questions…

What is Glitch Hop?

I had a really, really nice surprise recently.

I was given a few sample packs to review from Primeloops.com, one of which was called “Glitch Hop drum beats”. I had only heard of the genre in passing, never actually listening to it or researching it, but figuring I had the samples I convinced myself to take the time to do so.

I am so glad I did.

It was like the excitement when I discovered Dubstep. Powerful, electronic music that lives in its very own stylistic bubble. A new genre. But what’s that genre all about? Let’s ask some questions…
