Building my first home studio

Postby ACore423 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 3:06 am

Hello everyone.
My name is Aaron and I've got a question about setting up a studio. Please forgive me if this post has found itself in the inappropriate place, I usually just read and never post. Smiles. I'm aware I need an audio interface. I've been looking at getting the Mbox pro. My worry is, is that enough channels to record drums. I'm still learning I/O's and what not. Guess what I'm asking for is what do I need? I do produce dance music so, I'm pretty much set on what MIDI controller I want. But I also have a band and want to record every instrument myself. As I said, my main concern is drums which I plan to have at least 4 mics set up on it. I just don't want to go spend money on something I don't need or later realize it take another piece of gear to work. HELP!!

Thanks for reading fellow music lovers. Hope to hear back for some.

Well, for your drums, the most important thing to say is that it will be expensive, very, very expensive. Mics are expensive, and i'd say you need at least 4. I'm not familiar with specific drum mics, but AKG and Shure and other important mic producers offer guides about which of their mics goes where on a drum set. Keep in mind that you're gonna need mics, mic stands, loads of expensive XLR cables, probably some spins (for overheads) and an expensive audio interface.

My point is, maybe you should consider midi drums. There is a lot of software out there to make your drum programming sound as real as possible. If you can scratch out drums, it becomes soooo much easier. Guitars straight in the line in of your much cheaper audio interface, one mic for closing miking vocals, ...
You'll have enough trouble mixing it down and making it sound professional as it is, without having to do the drums too. It's up to you though, i don't want to traumatize you at all.

get some triggers, 1/4 inch cables, an alesis midi i/o and ezdrummer :D

connect the triggers to the drumset, hook the triggers to the midi i/o, hook that into the pc with usb, it converts the drum hits to midi notes, that you can assign a sample from ez drummer and edit in your daw midi editor
