Recording Bass/Guitar

Postby Ripper91 » Sat Dec 10, 2011 10:32 pm

I am wanting to record some Bass and Guitar in ableton and I'm wondering what the best setup would be. I have an Ashdown MAG full stack for the bass which I play live with and I'm most concerned about recording that and I've got a small Fender Frontman guitar amp as well. Would the best route be buying some sort of USB condenser mic or would I need some sort of Mixing desk/interface?

cheers

Shure SM57 microphones are notorious for being decent quality for relatively cheap. That mic can be run straight via XLR into a USB audio interface to your computer.

Now positioning the mic is a bit tricky. I seem to remember Dave doing a small tutorial on this but I can't for the life of me find it. ><
Things to consider:
1. how close the mic is to the center of the speaker
2. how close the mic is to the edge of the speaker
3. what angle the mic is in relation to the speaker.
3a. straight towards the speaker is more treble heavy
3b. sideways is more bass heavy

It's going to take some playing with. =/
