Bass Help

Postby Koas » Mon Jul 09, 2012 9:52 pm

Hi :)

I am a new Producer and have recently started using Reason after moving up from learning on FL Studio.

I mostly been producing Drum n bass and all my drum n bass so far has this liquad feel to it which i actually dont want. My biggest problem is i dont understand how the basslines work whether the is one long note or notes on the kicks and complicated chord progression. Oh and i have very little to no music theory background (learning as i go) :D Anyway, the sort of sound i am aiming for is like the song EXODUS - Nosia and Mayhem:

That type of dark fast paced Dnb while my beat is fine it just leaves me with the bassline and each one i make sounds too chilled and doesnt have the aggressive sound of these songs.

I know this may be a complicated for newbie like me but i really aiming for a sound like EXODUS :)

Thanks for any help :)
(oh and if anybody can explain how to make that sound for my bass would also be helpful :P )

I suppose you know how to use filters and automation?

You chose an artist with very complicated, well produced and difficult sounds... aiming for those tunes as a beginner might be tough as hell. Nevertheless, how I would try to reverse-engineer this one :D :
-The oscillator type sounds like square wave run through LP or BP filter.
-The nasty distortion shouldn't necessarily be too powerful, nor should it be on the higher frequency spectrum...(?)
-LP filter to finish it off, with automation for movement.

I think this is waaayyy too far from what you're trying to do, but I'd suggest to begin with this :)
And good luck with your new hobby :)
