Top quality studio monitors

Postby steed of the man » Tue Feb 07, 2012 1:58 am

I've decided I'd like to treat myself by investing lots of dinero into much needed monitors. Ideally I'd like to spend around £ 500 but could push up to £ 800 if they are really worth it.

Problem is I have no idea which are the best monitors, and with an overwhelming choice on the web, I want to make sure I'm spending the money wisely.

Thoughts? :)

Currently under consideration are:

JBL LSR2325P
KRK Rokit RP8 G2
Mackie HR 824 Mk2
If I gave you some feedback please help me with my track, thanks :)

What do you have currently?

I did tons of reasearch before buying mine. I settled on the Yamaha MSP5 - very natrual sound, crisp highs and true mids but they are lacking in the bass but I'm planning on adding a sub later on. Didn't get anything bigger then a 5" because I had a tighter budget.

Rockits seriously knock loud, if you like bass go for them. They also look amazing which is always a plus :D

The Mackies are very popular in mainstream studios. They sound natural and have a much more flat response compared to the Rockits. I've heard they are good for dnb and electronic music production...though don't count me on it.

If you want something fun, Yamaha have the HS80m which are supposed to have the same signature sound as the NS10s. The H80s are good as an A/B set of speakers to check your mix on but they are still good at producing a decent mix.

Also check out the Blue Sky Media Desk 2.1. They are supposed be awesome.

Make sure you listen each set of speakers before you commit, which is where I went wrong with the MSP5's. Don't get me wrong, they are a good pair of speakers, but they lack bass which is what I really need.

There are no "best" monitors like "the best ones for production".
If you are going for a REAL flat sound go to the webs and learn to read waterfall diagrams and audio spectral analysis diagrams... you can get them for a lot of monitors...

But the better way would be to get yourself a CD of some tracks you know REALLY good and where you know how they are MEANT to sound and get your butt to the next local dealer and LISTEN to some of them. The monitors that give you the sound you personally can relate to are the monitosr of your choice. Take care for highs and mids and not onlyx for the bass... you'll be surprised how "not as good" as other monitors some of them sound even if everybody begins to cream himself when talking about them ^^ Last time i took the time to listen to some different ones i was surprised how disappointingly dull (as in "the highs are drowned with the bass that overpowered everything... in every setting...) the krk 8's sounded... the JBL's they had there (dunno if the same as your consideration up there) sounded really nice... But there was too much "life" in them for my taste to mix with them... the couloured the sound beautifully... but i think one could adapt to that easily since it wasn't too much. They would be ok for just listen to music as well.

My 2 Cents are thrown in the room... I hope i helped at least a liuttle bit :)

Maybe I helped but most likely I was quite useless. Comment on my tracks to show me how it's to be done! Please?

I don't know anyone in person that owns mackies but I've seen some producer studios online with them, like alix perez, fracture and stuff.

Thanks for all the advice guys :)

I went down to my local dealer today and after I had thought about it I ended up going for Yamaha HS50M Active Monitors. Smaller and cheaper than I had originally intended on buying but all things considered they were the best for me to produce with, and in the end thats what counted.

Special thanks to Omzz888 for pointing me in the direction of the Yamaha HS80M's as I hadn't considered them before :D

Buy a used Juno-8. Then buy some PC speakers.

I just picked up a pair of Harman Kardon "Sound Sticks 3" and apart from looking like some flux capacitators/ Alien weaponry the smoothness of the sound is phenomenal, and only for £99
