Mnil - IYE remix 2 [sad attempt at dubstep]

Postby MnilinM » Tue Jul 03, 2012 9:49 pm

Alright, guys! i'm notoriously BAD at electronic music but i decided to try and get better anyway!

I took advantage of the Into Your Eyes stems a bit on this one, too.

By all means, I know this track is lacking... I need you guys to help me out here!

Be picky!

This isn't sad at all! I kinda like it actually. It's very minimal, but it works. Work on mastering your synths so you can make more coherent bass sounds and whatnot. Everything's well put together but the synths are kinda weak.

Your percussion needs infinitely more presence though. Your snare is particularly lacking, it seems to be a weedy sample to begin with, but it also seems like it's dead panned left and right. I'd generally keep percussion in the dead center of the stereo field, it helps tie the mix together.

Otherwise, this isn't bad at all. So keep it up, and soon enough you'll make bangers.

Great tune! It would work much better if You'll put some time into mixing it well. Just don't listen to it for few days or week (it depends), and after that try to mix it properly. For start try to tame dynamic on voice and try to make better proportions of each element. Not necessarily same in whole track. I am looking forward to hear the result.

Not bad at all, just a few things I noticed:
- Yeah, the snare lacks punch. Did you use a short delay (Haas effect) to widen it perhaps? If you did, leave some of the original in the center as well. Or layer it with something punchy.
- The vocal effects were cool at first, but in the chorus it started to get a bit too much. You could tone them down a bit for the chorus (and the bit after that, maybe).
- Most of your "bass" synths are pretty soft and wide, which sounds nice, but makes them flabby. Try splitting the high and low frequencies and making the latter one more monophonic. Or maybe split them in three, and try some distortion on the middle frequencies (and keep the low end mono). Multiband compression and EQ are always useful too.
- There was no drop when he said "drop" :( (jk)

Overall this is a great track, but there's a couple things I'd like to say.

- Like "Linner" said: "the snare lacks punch" I couldn't agree with this more.
- The vocal glitching effect you've got going on is pretty good although a tad high pitched, maybe bring it down just a little.

LoL yeah I figured this would be too predictable to just follow it with a drop. =P

Great ideas, guys! Keep 'em coming, please!

the effects in the vocals need to be cleaned up, you can hear alot of unwanted frequencies. that guitar is really good tho. the bass needs some equalizing and maybe some compression, some bit crushe or saturator would do the bass good. i would say this track is really good for a begginner

Version 10 up!

Probably the final version.

I'm going to keep the title of this thread the same, because v1 was definitely very very sad. But because of the help from all of you, it's become halfway decent!

Thanks guys!

And by all means, keep picking it apart!

This is cool :D I did notice however that in the drop, your drums, particularly the kick, kind of get drowned out. Try adding a very subtle sidechain compression to the bass, just allowing the kick to push through a little. Also, if you have a transient shaper plugin, whack that on the kick, and snare, it emphasises the quick attack of drums, making them really punchy/snappy. A good one is BitterSweet by Flux if your DAW supports VSTs. The bass is really, and I love how you incorporated the guitar as well. Good stuff! :D
