Okay, I figured this'd be a good resource for new (or experienced) producers who are short of cash or as cheap as I am.
These are a few of my recommendations.
Synths/Generators:
MonoFury
Supposed to be an emulation of the Korg Mono/poly. Fucked if I know. Despite its terrible preset, it is capable of a lot of good sounds, especially fat leads and basses. It has four individual oscillators.
blooo
Same developer as the MonoFury. It has kind of a tricky interface at first, but it pays of once you realise the possibilities that it presents.
Pixelpops
This weird thing can make some pretty cool glitch sounds. It's only controlled by the velocity of the note, which controls the waveform a slight bit (less noise with a higher v) and portamento. The pitch and waveform is random.
Polyvoks
Supposedly emulates the Russian Polivoks. Can sound really heavy as a bassline and pretty thick as a lead.
TAL Noisemaker
It's got a weird interface, but has some pretty cool sounds.
Minimogue VA
Supposed to be a Minimoog, sounds nothing like it. Although, it has some really sweet sounds, perfect for trance, chill or ambient.
Effects:
Distroyr V2.3
Badass distortion that sounds good on almost anything. Gives you different option between fat and harsh.
dblue Glitch
What can I not say about this beast? It even coined a term (glitch abuse) for how much people love to use it. To run it down: It has a sequencer that goes up to one bar and 9 different effects (tape stop, ring mod, stutter edit, shuffle, reverse, bitcrush, gate, delay/combfilter and time stretch). You can set any effect anywhere in the sequencer's timeline, aswell as random and no effect (you should probably use the no effect the most). All the effects sound high quality and most importantly: every possible parameter can be modified and modulated.
berrtill
Glitch distortion. Hard to explain the sound in any other way that brutal.
BJ Ring modulator
Good run-of-the-mill ring mod if you don't have.
BJ Wavechanger 3
This thing is weird. It detects the input sound's pitch and modulates a selectable waveform after it. You can also pitch up the waveform. It can make some interesting nasal insect noises, aswell as some other things.
BJ Bitcrusher
This is a bitcrusher and it is also distortion. HARD distortion. If you really want to fuck a sound up, use this. Beware with reverb, though.
Basically any effect by Togu Audio Line
TAL put out some good quality alternatives to the stock effects you get with your DAW. Their bitcrusher is especially nice.
GLITCHGIRL NEO
Insane glitch effect. I can't really explain its sound. It's good for total noise and IDM/industrial ambiance. May be a bit hard on your CPU.
SCATTERSHOT LITE
More tasteful than Glitchgirl, but still pretty insane. Hacks and chops a sound somewhere within recognition. Its parameters don't allow for modulation, which is a shame.
Bionic Delay
Great, smooth sounding stereo tape echo. Can go into loop mode.
jb Ferox
Tape emulator. Makes some nice tape distortion, but the tape speed knob steals the show. Great fun to play around with.
