Tutorial: How to make Hip Hop Hits

Tutorial Lyrics… uh… I mean Text.

Hi, I’m Dave from boyinaband
And today we’ll be creating a Hip Hop Beat
Now listen up close and get your mouse in your hand
’cause you know the result will be frickin’ sweet

First create a mastering suite, bypass ’till after the beat
is made, then make a mixer 14:2
Now create a combinator, name it to suit,
inside it make a ReDrum Drum Compute…er..

Oh yeah, initialize it, then load up a kit,
then click on the kick then make it hit on the

1, the 4, the 7 and 11, then right click
copy pattern to track, yeah it’s sounding sick
to start the “drop it like it’s hot” now we’ll add in the clap
that one’s pretty sweet, let’s roll with that

Now keep the attack on the 5 and 13
While we create the bass to make the ground shake
So combinator, thor, init, then show programmer
And we’ll have it hitting speakers harder than Thor’s Hammer

First record the loop, on top of the beat
A simple bass melody, nothing too unique
But let’s thicken it up – so make a multi-oscillator
we’ll have this bass shaking stars like Darth Vader

Take the mode to interval, detune a little bit,
run it through to the filter and you can hear it’s the shifted
saw waves that give it that added thickness
Now back it up with a sine, down an octave for some sub-bass sickness

Now there’s one thing with low frequency bass
’cause now the kick and the bass are competing for space
It’s like the bloods and the crips in this mix
So cut a small bandwidth like this (like this)

50hz should do it, now it can’t hurt to boost
around 180hz too, now let’s move on with the tune
Now make a combinator, time to load up somethin’ real
“Concert Grand Piano” will give this beat an epic feel

And keep the pedal point on “C”, ’cause that causes tension
I’ll work my way up the key, in a musical convention
Now let’s loop this for a bit, ’til I finish the riff
And before we let it go, let’s get some hi-hats in this bitch

New pattern, fill it up almost every step
Then turn the resolution to thirty-secondths
now copy that to the track and now we’re cookin’
Let’s make one more synth before we get to the hook and

It’s a combinator once more, use thor for the lead
synthesi-zer, initialize and while here, turn
on the portamento since this synth is meant to bend between
the notes, now chorus, delay and wait for the hook to boast that

This is how you make hip hop hits
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
This production grail is holy like cheese to the Swiss
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
I’ll teach you the beats if you follow the lyrics
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
Now listen ’cause I’m givin’ you a few more tips
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this [ copy and paste the beat for the next part of the track here.

It aint no thang to make big bad beats
You can do it in your sleep, yeah do it in your sleep
now run redrum into an equalizer
and rise up the bass to tectonic levels

That’s about seven decibels in english words
2.8 Q and 50 hertz
now so the volume doesn’t slaughter the track
add a compressor with a quarter attack

The presets set are nice and now
the level of the beat will be brought down
without reducing the punchiness which we want to keep
but the beat is still weak so let’s layer the hit s

so hit tab to swap to the back-of-the-rack then
Gate out to gate in, gate out to gate in
now quickly load a combinator up with some cellos
that my friend with synaesthesia says are yellow

Now bellow out a riff with some octave chords and
they go F G G# B flat-out awesome
for some more chorus anticipation add some bangin’ fx
a reverse and a crash to smash like an angry ex

Put the reverse on gate, so it stops in the right place and we
draw them in in the sequencer on the C1 octave, blatantly
just don’t forget to add the crash in for afters
One last thing before we hit the chorus – The master

Now finish your mix, then turn it to the preset “Hip Hop”
Which boosts the snare and kick, compresses then acts as a clip stop
now listen to the quality as I turn on the mastering suite
You’ll all realise that mastering’s sweet, now you know

This is how you make hip hop hits
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
If you want to make music, I’m here to grant your wish
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
My mouse cursor spazzes like it’s having fits
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
Now I’m gonna add some epic choral bits
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this

This is how you make hip hop hits
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
It’s boyinaband bringing you tutorial bliss
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
I’ll teach you the beats if you follow the lyrics
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
I think it’s time to wrap up and finish
You do it like this, yeah you do it like this
